In Cyprus, the police explained who is allowed to carry weapons for self-defense
In Cyprus, anyone who feels in danger has the right to obtain a license to carry a firearm. The Cyprus Police explained how to do this and what conditions must be met for self-defense.
The procedure for obtaining a license for firearms for citizens at risk was explained by a representative of the Cyprus Police, Christos Andreou, on the ALPHA Good Morning television program.
According to the police officer, any citizen who feels that their physical integrity is at risk should write a letter to the Chief of Police justifying the reasons for such a belief.
This request is reviewed by a committee chaired by the Deputy Chief of Police, consisting of four senior assistants and employees from other departments. If, after verification and obtaining information, it is established that the risk is real, the Chief of Police will send a letter to the Minister of Justice requesting final approval of the permit by the Council of Ministers.
It is noted that the license is issued for a period of up to two years. At the end of this period, the applicant's need to own firearms is reassessed.
In addition, before issuing the weapon, the person is trained by a special police unit, and the responsible police officer regularly checks whether the person is in possession of the weapon and its condition.
