A Giant 'London Eye' Equivalent to Be Built in Central Limassol for 50 Million Euros
A giant Ferris wheel costing 50 million euros will be built in Limassol. The Cypriot equivalent of the famous "London Eye" will stand 147 meters tall and feature 36 cabins.
The massive structure, named "Hyperion Limassol," will be located in the heart of Limassol, in the historic area of the old port. According to local media, the Ferris wheel will be constructed on a special embankment on the southern side of the Old Port of Limassol, within the administrative boundaries of the municipality. The project also includes an electronic aquarium.
The Ferris wheel will be similar to the famous "London Eye." Each cabin will accommodate 6 to 12 people.
An environmental impact assessment is currently being conducted before the project's implementation, open for consultation until December 7, 2024.
The preparation of this assessment is necessary for the project's licensing, aiming to determine the construction and operation's environmental impact.
The project's goal is to create new leisure and entertainment areas, as well as to address some of the employment needs within the Limassol municipality. It is expected that the project will create new jobs and enhance the socio-economic appeal of the region.
It is also reported that the 50-million-euro project is linked to Ukrainian businessman Dmitry Lepkov. The competent authority for the project is the Cyprus Ports Authority, which also owns the site.
A breakwater is expected to be constructed to protect the promenade from wave erosion. The main public access to the complex will be from the eastern quay of the Old Port of Limassol, connected to the beach road Spiros Araouzos through the port's land plots.
The prototype of Cyprus's "Hyperion Limassol," the "London Eye" Ferris wheel, is located in the Lambeth district of London on the south bank of the Thames and is the largest structure of its kind in Europe. It was inaugurated on December 31, 1999, and stands at 135 meters high.
