Nearly 70 Teenagers Sent for Addiction Treatment in Cyprus Over the Last Three Years
Between 2023 and 2025, 70 minors were referred to treatment centers in Cyprus for detoxification from narcotic substances. Currently, nine teenagers remain in inpatient care at the rehabilitation center in Latsia, with plans to discharge five of them by the end of the summer.
According to data from the Cyprus News Agency, provided by the Monitoring and Research Department of the Cyprus Anti-Drug Addiction Treatment Authority (CATA), in 2023, 112 adults aged 18 to 24 and 26 minors under the age of 18 were admitted for treatment. In 2024, 92 adults and 29 minors sought help.
In 2023 and 2024, 16 adults successfully completed their treatment programs. Of the 26 minors referred in 2023, 11 completed the program, while only five out of 29 minors in 2024 finished their treatment. Data for 2025 is not yet available.
Notably, there has been an increase in the number of treatment requests for minors under 18 over the past three years (2021-2023):
• 2021 — 40 requests
• 2022 — 62 requests
• 2023 — 48 requests
Treatment requests come from both families and public institutions, including the Social Welfare Service, the police, and the courts. These referrals cover both outpatient therapeutic programs (mainly for adults) and inpatient centers exclusively for minors.
Open programs are offered in Nicosia ("Perseus"), Limassol ("Prometheus"), Larnaca ("I Decide That Eighteen Is Below"), Paphos ("Tolmi"), and Famagusta ("Achilles"). The inpatient treatment center, managed by "Agia Skepi," has been operational since 2019 in Latsia, Nicosia. The rehabilitation program typically lasts between 6 and 9 months, though the duration can be adjusted based on the needs of the participants.
