Knowledge of the Greek language should become a key factor in the issuance of extended work permits, as well as for new foreign applicants. This was announced by the Minister of Labour of the Republic of Cyprus, Yannis Panayiotou.

The minister also acknowledged that the domestic workforce is insufficient to meet the island's needs. However, priority for filling the labor shortage will be given to unemployed individuals and students from third countries who are already residing in Cyprus.

Nevertheless, according to the minister, one of the criteria taken into account when seeking employment will soon be the ability to speak Greek.

The correlation between proficiency in the Greek language and the issuance and renewal of work permits for third-country nationals will be implemented this year.

  • Permanent employees on the island, especially in the service sector, must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the Greek language, - emphasized the minister.

It is expected that satisfactory proficiency in the language will serve as an advantage for workers from third countries seeking employment in Cyprus.

  • Satisfactory language skills will expedite the processing of applications submitted for employment in Cyprus - as is the case in other EU member states, - added Yannis Panayiotou.

Additionally, according to the minister, the country is conducting a targeted campaign to attract workers from EU countries.

The campaign involves signing bilateral agreements with candidate countries and third countries to attract workers of medium and low qualifications.

The minister emphasized that replenishing the shortage of foreign personnel will be carried out simultaneously with limiting the perception of the island as an attractive place for illegal migrants, and the number of inspections will be increased to 10,000 compared to 6,000 in 2023.
