Fig Cave in Northern Cyprus
We are talking about the gypsum cave of İnğirli Mağarası, which translates as Fig. The entrance to the cave is directly covered by a fig tree, making it difficult to see the extensive gypsum labyrinths hidden behind it.
What is notable about the cave
The Fig Cave is notable not only for its size, although it is the longest in Cyprus. In the cave's chambers, you will find both stalactites and stalagmites, with all walls covered in various minerals, making it resemble a room encrusted with precious stones.
History of the cave's discovery
According to legend, near the aforementioned fig tree, thieves stored their loot from the surroundings to later transport it elsewhere. However, they discovered that part of the goods had fallen beneath the tree – thus, the İnğirli Cave was discovered.
Inside the cave, traces of ancient human habitation were found. Archaeological findings allowed scientists to determine that the cave was inhabited in ancient times. The discovered remains suggest that the cave was used as a shelter or dwelling for many centuries.
Dimensions of the Fig Cave
The length of the passages is over 300 meters, but only 70 of them are equipped and illuminated. However, this is more than enough, as inside awaits true beauty. The cave descends 14 meters from the entrance point.
How to get to the Fig Cave
