Historic Grand Hammam in Nicosia Reopens After Extensive Restoration
The Grand Hammam in Nicosia, also known as the Büyük Hamam, has reopened to the public following a major renovation funded by the Cyprus Foundations Administration (Evkaf).
This historic bathhouse is a vital part of Cyprus’s cultural and architectural heritage, representing one of the rare structures preserved from the Ottoman era.
As part of a tender process initiated by Evkaf, the Grand Hammam underwent a comprehensive restoration, carefully maintaining its historical essence and functional purpose.
According to Evkaf’s statement, the Grand Hammam was originally constructed between 1571 and 1590 and has stood as a prominent symbol of Nicosia since the 16th century.
Speaking at the reopening ceremony, Mustafa Tümer, the Director General of Evkaf, described the event as a historic day for Cyprus. He emphasized the significance of bringing such an iconic structure, with roots dating back to the 1590s, back to life.
Following the ceremonial ribbon-cutting, the hammam officially reopened its doors to visitors, offering them a glimpse into centuries-old traditions and craftsmanship.
