Gymnastics in Northern Cyprus: Sports Clubs for Children and Teenagers

Updated: 2 weeks ago

Gymnastics in Northern Cyprus has long gone beyond ordinary children’s classes. The Gymnastics Federation operates here, sports and rhythmic gymnastics clubs are active, local competitions are held, and the strongest athletes compete in tournaments in Turkey and other countries.

Children can take part for physical development or later move on to competitive groups. In 2026, the Northern Cyprus team took third place among junior women’s teams at the Turkish Club Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Antalya, while athletes trained by Dora Kamilova from Ultimate won 9 medals at the PRINCESS CUP international rhythmic gymnastics tournament in Baku.

How gymnastics is developing in Northern Cyprus

The development of this sport is managed by KKTC Cimnastik Federasyonu - the Gymnastics Federation of Northern Cyprus. It brings clubs together, organises competitions, works with coaches and develops sports infrastructure.

Over recent years, the discipline has grown considerably. According to the Federation, in 2019 around 150 athletes were training within its system and 5 coaches were working there. By 2026, the number of participants had reached 7,000, while the number of coaches had risen to 250. The number of centres where training takes place increased from one to 32, and the Federation’s structure includes 22 clubs.

At the same time, this concerns not only high-level athletes. The system includes children who are just starting out, participants in regular groups and gymnasts moving on to competitive training.

The Federation also promotes early exposure to gymnastics. As part of its programme for identifying talented children, classes and introductory training sessions are also held for preschoolers.

Specialised training facilities are being created in different areas of Northern Cyprus at the same time. This makes it possible to practise gymnastics not only in Lefkoşa and Girne. The discipline is developing particularly actively in Famagusta and the central areas.

Artistic and rhythmic gymnastics: what is the difference

Before choosing a club, it is worth deciding on the discipline. Both artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics are available in Northern Cyprus.

Artistic gymnastics

Artistic gymnastics is built around acrobatics, strength, coordination and work on gymnastics apparatus. The women’s programme includes floor exercise, balance beam, uneven bars and vault. The men’s programme includes its own set of disciplines and apparatus.

It is in artistic gymnastics that athletes from Northern Cyprus take part in Turkish club championships.

Rhythmic gymnastics

Rhythmic gymnastics combines gymnastics training, flexibility, coordination, choreography and work with apparatus — ball, hoop, ribbon, clubs and rope.

This is a separate competitive discipline. In Northern Cyprus, clubs operate whose athletes take part not only in local competitions but also in international tournaments.

Is it possible to practise gymnastics professionally

Yes, Northern Cyprus has an established competitive system. A child can start in a beginner group and then, at an appropriate level, move to a club’s competitive team and take part in local championships.

The strongest athletes have the opportunity to compete outside Northern Cyprus. In July 2026, the KKTC Cimnastik Kulübü team took third place among junior women’s teams at the Turkish Club Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Antalya.

There have also been international results in rhythmic gymnastics. In June 2026, athletes trained by Dora Kamilova from the Ultimate club competed at the PRINCESS CUP international tournament in Baku and won 9 medals — 7 gold and 2 silver.

Therefore, if a child has a serious interest, it is worth asking the club not only about the minimum enrolment age, but also about the availability of a competitive group, the number of training sessions per week and the procedure for moving to the next training level.

Clubs in other areas of Northern Cyprus

Gymnastics clubs operate not only in the three largest cities. Teams from other areas of Northern Cyprus also take part in Federation competitions, including Koopbank Birkan Uzun Cimnastik Salonu.

The facility was created for gymnastics classes for children and young people in the western region of Northern Cyprus.

If a family lives in Güzelyurt, the İskele district, Mesaoria or other settlements, it is worth first checking whether there is a nearby Federation club: the network of training centres continues to expand, and classes may take place significantly closer than Lefkoşa, Girne or Famagusta.

How to choose a club for a child

First, it is worth deciding on the discipline. If a child enjoys acrobatics, exercises on apparatus, strength and complex gymnastics elements, artistic gymnastics should be considered. If flexibility, choreography and exercises with a ribbon, ball, hoop or clubs are more appealing, rhythmic gymnastics may be a better choice.

When contacting a club for the first time, it is useful to state the child’s age and say whether they have practised gymnastics before. The coach will be able to determine the appropriate group.

If the goal is to take part in competitions in the future, it is worth additionally asking about the availability of a competitive group, the number of training sessions per week, the requirements for moving into it and the club’s participation in Federation competitions.

For a young child, what matters more than the number of medals won by older athletes is an appropriate age group, a qualified coach, safe equipment and a gradual increase in the workload.
