History of the holiday

From the perspective of Turkish Cypriot historiography, Peace and Freedom Day symbolises the liberation of the Turkish-speaking population of Northern Cyprus. In July 1974, as a result of a coup d'état on the island, supporters of the union of Cyprus with Greece (enosis) came to power. Against the backdrop of the escalating intercommunal conflict, Turkey launched a military operation known as Operation «Attila».

On 20 July 1974, Turkish troops landed on the coast in the Girne area. These events led to the end of violence against Turkish Cypriots and shaped the island's modern political map. For the people of Northern Cyprus, this date remains a symbol of peace, security and the preservation of the Turkish Cypriot community.

How Peace and Freedom Day is celebrated

On 20 July, festive events take place in all districts of Northern Cyprus. The day begins with official ceremonies and the laying of wreaths at monuments to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Dr Fazıl Küçük and Rauf Denktaş, as well as at memorials dedicated to the events of 1974.

Representatives of the leadership of Northern Cyprus and Turkey, military personnel, public organisations and residents take part in the celebrations. Concerts, exhibitions, themed events and festive programmes are organised in many cities.

One of the most anticipated events in recent years has been the air show by the SOLOTÜRK aerobatic team of the Turkish Air Force. The demonstration flight of an F-16 fighter jet takes place over the coast of Girne and attracts thousands of spectators every year. A practice flight is usually held on the eve of the holiday.

Event programme

The holiday programme is updated every year, but traditionally includes:

• official state ceremonies;
• the laying of wreaths at monuments and memorials;
• a military parade;
• speeches by the leadership of Northern Cyprus and Turkey;
• concerts and cultural events;
• the SOLOTÜRK air show;
• visits to Turkish Navy ships.

In 2026, the holiday programme also includes the participation of Turkish Navy ships, the opening of the Vessel Traffic Management Centre, exhibitions and additional ceremonial events in different districts of Northern Cyprus.

On 20 July 2026, as part of the Peace and Freedom Day celebrations, three Turkish Navy ships will be open to visitors: the TCG I. İnönü (S-360) submarine, the TCG Zıpkın (P-336) missile boat and the TCG Gökova (F-496) frigate. The submarine and missile boat will be stationed at the tourist port of Girne, while the frigate will be anchored off the coast. TCG Gökova will be accessible by sea transport from the Old Port of Girne. Visiting hours: from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00. Entry is with a passport.

The largest events traditionally take place in Lefkoşa and Girne, but celebrations are also organised in Famagusta, İskele, Güzelyurt and other cities.

What tourists need to know

Peace and Freedom Day is an official day off. Government institutions, banks and municipal services are closed on this day, but most restaurants, cafés, hotels and tourist attractions continue to welcome visitors.

During official events, some streets may be temporarily closed, especially in the centres of Lefkoşa and Girne. If you plan to watch the SOLOTÜRK air show, it is best to arrive at the viewing location in advance, as the Girne waterfront traditionally attracts large crowds.
