How to get to Northern Cyprus by car from Turkey — ferry, control, and registration

If you decide to arrive in the northern part of Cyprus by car, our detailed guide will be useful — from registration and passing controls to disembarking at Kyrenia Port.

The ferry from Turkey to Northern Cyprus departs from Taşucu Port, which is located about 100 kilometers from Mersin. Regular sailings operate several times a week and take about 6–8 hours depending on the type of vessel and weather conditions.

Registration

Registration must be completed in advance at the Akgünler company office in the city. Registration must be completed 2.5 hours before departure. You need to have your ticket, passport, and vehicle documents with you. After verification, you will be issued boarding passes.

It is recommended to check the departure time in advance — sometimes sailings may be shifted due to weather conditions or technical work at the port.

Passing control

After registration, head to Seka Limanı port. Upon entering the port area through the gate marked Özel Güvenlik, security will check your tickets and passes, after which they will indicate which queue to place the car in.

Passengers go through passport control separately from the driver. The driver goes through control after parking the car in the queue. Then they must go to the customs building, where:

• fines and toll road debts are checked,
• cash payment is accepted if necessary,
• an exit permission stamp is issued.

To avoid delays, you can check and pay fines in advance through the GiB app or on the website gib.gov.tr.

Next, the driver goes to the Araç Kayıt / Car Registration desk for the vehicle’s ferry admission stamp. After that, you can wait to board in the car. After entering the ferry, passengers are seated on the ferry according to their tickets.

Boarding the ferry

After loading is announced, the ferry gates will open and a port employee will check your documents and the admission stamp. The boarding order is determined by the port dispatcher.

Being inside the car while the ferry is moving is prohibited. The driver must go up to the passenger deck and take the seat indicated on the ticket. There is a café, toilets, and a rest area on board.

Disembarking from the ferry

After arriving at Kyrenia Port, you must drive off the ferry and park the car next to the Araç Giriş İşlemleri / Gümrük booth. This is convenient for quickly passing control and prevents blockage by other cars.

Then go through:

1. Passport control — present your passport and ticket.
2. Port fee — paid at the Araç Ordino ve Sigorta / Delivery Order and Insurance booth.
3. Car insurance — can be issued for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months.

After payment, present the receipt and documents at the Araç Giriş İşlemleri / Gümrük booth. Customs officers will stamp the documents and, if necessary, carry out a random inspection of the vehicle’s contents.

This can be done through the official website gib.gov.tr or in the mobile app GiB. Select Dijital Vergi Dairesi → Yabancı Plakalı Araç Ödemeleri (Foreign Vehicle Payments), enter the vehicle number, and get the result.

What is the port fee?
As of the end of 2025, the port fee is 80 TL for cars with Cypriot plates and 150 TL for cars with foreign plates (including Turkish ones).

Can I buy a ticket online?
Yes, tickets can be purchased on ferry company websites, including Akgünler Denizcilik. Online booking allows you to choose the ferry type — passenger or car ferry.
