Governor’s Beach: Small Beaches Among White Cliffs
Governor’s Beach is located near the village of Pentakomo, east of Limassol. It is one of the most unusual stretches of coastline in the Republic of Cyprus: dark-grey sand lies beside high white cliffs and clear blue sea. But the main feature of the area is the small beaches between the rocky outcrops. Some of them are very tiny: a few sun loungers, an umbrella, a strip of sand and white cliffs on both sides.
It is these small coves that make Governor’s Beach especially interesting. From above, the coast looks like a chain of separate beaches divided by pale rocks. At the same time, it is quite comfortable to relax here: there are sun loungers and umbrellas, showers, toilets, changing rooms, parking and restaurants.

Beaches between the white cliffs
Governor’s Beach is not one long strip of sand. White rocky outcrops divide the coast into separate beach areas and small coves. The latter are the most unusual-looking.
In some places, only a very narrow strip of dark sand remains between two cliffs. Only a few sun loungers and umbrellas are placed here, so from the side the area looks almost like a separate little beach.
Stairs and descents from above lead to some of the beaches. When looking at the coastline from the cliffs, it is especially easy to see how the small sandy stretches follow one another.
The white colour of the cliffs creates a strong contrast with the dark sand and sea. This landscape, rather than the size of the beach, is the main reason to visit Governor’s Beach.

Governor’s Beach is characterised by clear water and dark-grey sand. Official tourism sources also note the calm water and relatively gently sloping sections of the shore.
The white cliffs continue underwater, making the coast interesting for snorkelling. At the same time, the small coves differ in their underwater terrain: before swimming, it is better to look at the specific entry point into the sea and assess the condition of the water.
In windy conditions and strong waves, you should not enter the water near the rocky outcrops.
Sun loungers and infrastructure
Despite its unusual natural terrain, Governor’s Beach is equipped for a beach holiday. Organised areas have sun loungers and umbrellas, toilets, showers and changing rooms. Parking spaces are available, and cafés and restaurants operate near the coast.
At the time of our visit, one sun lounger cost 3.50 EUR, while a set of two sun loungers and one umbrella cost 10 EUR. This was the actual price at the time of the visit; rates may change.

Lifeguards with rescue equipment and first-aid supplies work on the beach from April to October. It is better to check the current duty hours on the information boards directly on the beach.

Governor’s Beach has long been known for its fish restaurants and traditional establishments by the sea. It is therefore quite possible to come here for most of the day: spend several hours on the beach and then stay for lunch.

Kalymnos Fish Tavern is located directly above Kalymnos Beach, in the Governor’s Beach area. It is a seafood restaurant with an open terrace overlooking the coast — a convenient option for lunch after the beach.

There are also other traditional restaurants specialising in fish in the Governor’s Beach area. Before travelling on a weekend or public holiday, it is better to check the opening hours of the establishment you have chosen and reserve a table if necessary.
Things to consider before your trip
- The white cliffs can leave pale chalk marks on clothing and belongings, so it is better not to place them directly on the rock.
- The high cliffs create shade. In the small coves, the sun may disappear earlier than on an open stretch of coastline.
- If you plan to spend several hours on the beach, it is better to bring water with you: the choice of shops directly by the coast is limited.
- Some areas are accessed by stairs, so not every small beach is equally convenient for prams or people with reduced mobility.
- You should not approach an unfenced cliff edge for the view from above.
Why is the beach called Governor’s Beach
The name appeared during the period of British rule in Cyprus. This stretch of coast was visited by British people living on the island, and the governor had a holiday home in the area. Over time, the coast became known as Governor’s Beach.

A trip to Governor’s Beach can conveniently be combined with one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Republic of Cyprus — the Neolithic settlement of Choirokoitia.
Choirokoitia
Choirokoitia is a Neolithic settlement and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The archaeological complex helps visitors imagine life in Cyprus long before the island’s famous ancient cities appeared.
Archaeological remains of the settlement have been preserved on the site, while several round dwellings have been reconstructed near the entrance to show the presumed appearance of the ancient settlement.
From 16 September to 15 April, the site is open daily from 08:30 to 17:00, while from 16 April to 15 September it is open from 08:30 to 19:30. The entrance fee is 2.50 EUR. Opening hours and prices may change without prior notice.
