Kourion Beach

Kourion Beach is located at the foot of white limestone cliffs that offer views of the entire southern coast. History of ancient Kourion

Rising above the beach is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Republic of Cyprus — the ancient city of Kourion. According to legend, it was founded by settlers from Argos in Greece around the 12th century BC after the Trojan War.

For many centuries, Kourion was one of the largest city-states on the island. Thanks to its advantageous location on a high cliff, its inhabitants controlled maritime trade routes and the fertile lands of the Kouris River valley.

The city reached its greatest prosperity during the Roman Empire. It was then that luxurious villas with mosaics, public baths, a marketplace and the famous theatre, which has survived to this day, were built.

In the 4th century AD, several powerful earthquakes almost completely destroyed Kourion. Part of the city was later rebuilt, but it never regained its former importance. Today, the archaeological park is considered one of the most visited historical sites in Cyprus.
