Tochni Village in Cyprus

Updated: 2 months ago

Tochni is a small traditional village in the Larnaca District, located approximately halfway between Limassol and Larnaca. It is known for its golden stone houses, restored guest apartments, quiet streets and views of the surrounding hills. It is worth coming here for a few hours or staying overnight to see a more leisurely side of the Republic of Cyprus.

The main reasons to visit Tochni are its traditional architecture, the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen, a small Byzantine museum, the ruins of a Latin church and its well-developed agrotourism. The trip can conveniently be combined with lunch at Tochni Tavern, a walk along the nature trail and visits to the nearby archaeological sites of Choirokoitia and Kalavasos-Tenta.

What makes Tochni interesting

Tochni is one of the old villages of the Republic of Cyprus where traditional development has been preserved. It is located among low hills and agricultural land, away from dense resort development. There are not many attractions here, but the village makes an impression thanks to its overall atmosphere: narrow streets, stone façades, inner courtyards and views from the upper quarters.

Tochni is particularly suitable for those who prefer leisurely walks, small villages and traditional guest houses. This is not a place for a packed sightseeing programme, but rather a convenient half-day stop or a base for trips between Limassol, Larnaca and the central part of the island.

History of Tochni

The exact date of Tochni’s foundation is unknown, but the village is considered one of the oldest on the island and was already in existence during the medieval period. Thanks to its location near roads linking the southern coast with the inland areas of Cyprus, the settlement developed as an agricultural and craft centre.

The history of the village reflects the different periods of the island’s past. An Orthodox church, the remains of a Latin church and other traces of its layered cultural heritage have been preserved in the centre. Many of the old houses were built from local limestone quarried nearby.

In recent decades, many historic buildings have been restored and converted into guest houses. As a result, Tochni has become one of the notable centres of rural tourism in the Republic of Cyprus.

Tochni’s stone houses

One of the village’s main features is its houses built from the so-called Tochni stone. The local limestone has a warm golden-beige hue, so the buildings look especially striking in the morning and before sunset.

Traditional houses usually have massive stone walls, wooden shutters, small balconies, arched passageways and inner courtyards. Many buildings have been carefully restored: on the outside they retain their historic appearance, while inside they are equipped for modern living.

For a walk, it is best to choose the central and upper parts of the village. Some streets are quite steep, so comfortable shoes will be more useful than beach sandals.

Church of Saints Constantine and Helen

Tochni’s main shrine is dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helen. The present-day church stands in the centre of the village and was restored on the site of an earlier church.

According to local tradition, the original church was founded by Saint Helen after her return from the Holy Land. The legend connects this place with a fragment of the True Cross, which she is said to have brought to Cyprus. It is impossible to historically confirm all the details of the tradition, so it should be regarded as part of the local ecclesiastical heritage.

The church stands out because of its unusual location next to a stone bridge and the watercourse separating parts of the village. Before visiting, bear in mind that this is an active church: visitors should observe silence and wear modest clothing.

Ruins of the Latin church and Byzantine museum

Not far from the Orthodox church are the ruins of a Latin church dating from the medieval period. Only part of the building has survived, but the remains of the stonework give an idea of how diverse the religious history of the village was.

Tochni also has a small Byzantine museum. Its exhibition is connected with the ecclesiastical heritage and local religious traditions. Opening hours at small rural museums may change, so it is best to check the possibility of visiting in advance.

Guest houses and agrotourism

Tochni has become known for its restored traditional houses, which are now used as guest apartments. This format differs from an ordinary hotel: guests stay not in a separate hotel building, but in historic houses located in different parts of the village.

Tochni is worth choosing for those who want to spend the evening in a quiet setting, have breakfast overlooking the hills and use the village as a starting point for trips. It is more convenient to reach the sea, archaeological sites and neighbouring villages by car.

Tochni Tavern

Tochni Tavern is situated on a hill and has a terrace facing the village and the surrounding valley. It is one of the main places in Tochni where traditional Cypriot cuisine can be combined with a beautiful view.

The tavern focuses on fresh local and seasonal products. The menu includes meze, grilled meat dishes, vegetable appetisers and other Cypriot dishes. The selection of seasonal dishes depends on the vegetables, fish and other products available.

The place is especially pleasant in the evening, when the stone houses and hills are illuminated by soft sunset light. At weekends and during the tourist season, it is best to reserve a table on the terrace in advance.

Nature trail and walks

A circular nature trail approximately 2.8 km long runs along the south-eastern edge of the village. Part of the route follows an old road that was once used by the residents of Tochni and neighbouring villages.

The route is considered easy and takes approximately 40–60 minutes, depending on your pace and stops. Along the way, there are views of the countryside, hills and valley, while in spring you can see flowering grasses and wild plants.

In summer, it is best to plan the walk in the morning or closer to sunset, as there is almost no shade in the exposed sections. You should bring water and wear closed shoes with sturdy soles.

Cricket field in Tochni

There is a cricket field in the vicinity of the village, created on the site of a former agricultural plot. The first matches were held there in 2018, after the grounds had been prepared by the local sporting community.

Cricket is not among the traditional sports of Cyprus, so the field looks unusual amid the rural landscape. It is used for matches and training, but is not an ordinary tourist attraction. The schedule of games and the possibility of attending events should be checked with the Cyprus Cricket Federation.
