Cyprus to Allocate €9 Million for Clergy Salaries in 2025

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus plans to allocate approximately €9 million for clergy salaries in 2025.

According to the budget presented by the Ministry of Finance, €8.85 million will be allocated for the salaries of Orthodox priests and clergy working in rural areas. Additionally, €350,000 will be designated for clergy members of other denominations, including Maronites, the Armenian Church, and Catholics.

The agreement, signed in 1971 by President Makarios, established that the state would cover part of the clergy’s salaries in exchange for church-owned land. However, much of this land is located in the northern part of the island.

Under the terms of the agreement, the state provides each clergy member with a monthly payment of €681. In 2025, this allowance will be given to 850 clergy members.
