Three public organisations advocating a left-wing political agenda and supporting the idea of an independent and federal Cyprus have announced that they will hold a march in Lefkoşa on 14 August under the slogan «We are marching for an independent Cyprus».

The event was initiated by the youth organisation Anonim Gençlik, the political movement Bağımsızlık Yolu and the cultural centre Baraka Kültür Merkezi. In a joint statement, the organisers said that they were holding the march in order to «defend the will for an independent, free and federal Cyprus».

«The future will be written not through submission, but through struggle. That is why we are taking to the streets on 14 August this year as well,» the statement said. The organisations said they support strengthening the role of Turkish Cypriots in decision-making, social justice, a peaceful resolution to the Cyprus issue and a federal structure for the island.

The statement also noted that residents of the northern part of Cyprus are facing economic difficulties and external dependence, while the organisers called on people to stand against poverty, social problems and political pressure. The march will take place on Friday, 14 August, starting at 18:30 near the former Pronto Çemberi in Lefkoşa.
