A 96-year-old woman is being threatened with eviction from a nursing home for throwing parties
96-year-old American Lillian Droniak, better known on social media as Grandma Droniak, found herself at the center of an unusual conflict. The management of a nursing home in Connecticut threatened to evict the woman after numerous complaints about the noisy parties she regularly threw in her room. However, the pensioner not only refused to comply with the administration's demands, but also demonstratively tore up the official warning on camera.
«I pay $12,000 a month. That means I can throw parties»
The story drew wide attention after Lillian posted a video on TikTok and Instagram. In the clip, she reads out a letter from the facility's administration, which says that parties and giving alcohol to other residents are prohibited at the institution. In addition, management said security cameras had captured guests leaving her room around 1 a.m., and neighbors had repeatedly complained about the noise.
The pensioner's reaction was unexpected. She tore up the letter, saying:
«I can do whatever I want. I pay $12,000 a month to live here. We will drink, gossip and have fun. I can't help myself — I just love parties!»
The video quickly went viral and amassed millions of views.
The conflict was resolved without eviction
Despite the loud statements about a possible eviction, it did not come to drastic measures.
A representative for Lillian confirmed to U.S. media that the two sides had reached a compromise. The woman was allowed to have guests late into the night, but she agreed not to offer alcohol to other residents anymore. After that, the conflict was resolved.
An internet star who does not plan to «age by the rules»
Lillian Droniak is one of the most famous elderly bloggers in the world. Today she is followed by more than 12 million subscribers on TikTok and around 4 million on Instagram. Her popularity has come from humorous videos about life, dating, relationships, her own funeral arrangements, and everyday stories from the nursing home.
Her grandson Kevin began filming videos with Grandma back in 2012. Over time, the family pastime turned into a full-fledged internet phenomenon.
Before retirement, Lillian worked at Sikorsky Aircraft, where she was involved in helicopter production. She now has three children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who regularly visit her and support Grandma's online activity.
Could she really have been evicted?
Lawyers note that in the United States, nursing homes cannot evict residents arbitrarily. Federal law allows involuntary discharge only for a limited list of reasons, including a threat to the safety or health of other residents, inability to provide the necessary care, long-term nonpayment for accommodation, or closure of the facility. At the same time, the administration must follow the established procedure and notify the resident in advance of a possible eviction.
That is why Lillian's story most likely ended in compromise: after refusing to give alcohol to other residents, the administration did not pursue her eviction.
The story of the 96-year-old American became another reminder that age does not always mean a quiet life. For millions of social media users, Grandma Droniak has long become a symbol of a person who, even in a nursing home, is not about to give up a sense of humor, socializing and a love of life.
