Ercan Airport introduces new rules due to traffic congestion

Traffic flow and parking arrangements at Ercan Airport will be changed to reduce the number of vehicles gathering around the terminal. The new rules will be tested next week and will come fully into force on 24 August.

One of the main changes will be the creation of a separate waiting area in the car park for taxis, buses and tourist transport. Only five taxis and five buses will be allowed to be at the arrivals terminal at the same time. When additional transport is needed, drivers will be called to the terminal by radio. The traffic flow scheme in the car park will also change. The exit will be moved to its eastern section so that vehicles can head directly towards the airport's main exit and avoid creating additional congestion near the terminal.

A parking fee has been introduced for private cars picking up passengers at the airport. The first hour of parking will cost 50 Turkish lira.

Enver Öztürk, Deputy Minister of Public Works and Transport, said that the traffic situation at the airport had become unacceptable and required a solution. According to him, the new measures should make traffic near the airport safer and more orderly.

Once the rules come into force, vehicles will be prohibited from waiting on the access road to the arrivals terminal. The municipal police will issue fines for parking violations, while vehicles left in prohibited areas — will be towed.
