Ataoğlu: Airfares to the TRNC fell after talks with Turkey
TRNC Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu said on 1 September that airfares to Northern Cyprus had started to fall following consultations with the president of the republic and the Turkish authorities.
Airfares rose sharply after the Filo Jet ferry accident off Kyrenia on 30 August: maritime services to Turkey were suspended, leaving air travel as the only way to reach the island. Some tickets to Ercan Airport reached 22,000 lira.
Ataoğlu called the price increase unacceptable. He said that in such a situation, carriers should have announced discounts rather than sought to profit, and urged airlines not to make money from someone else’s misfortune.
The deputy prime minister plans to bring the issue of measures against price gouging before a meeting of the TRNC Council of Ministers in order to establish a mechanism that will prevent such a situation from recurring.
Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı also confirmed the decrease, saying that airfares had fallen significantly. Maritime services are recovering more slowly: the Ministry of Transport said that Akgünler services had resumed, but the catamaran’s departure depends on the weather.
