If you are buying a car with the idea of driving it for decades, experts already know which brands are worth paying attention to. The analytics company iSeeCars has released a large-scale study of vehicle longevity, finding which brands and models have the highest chance of surpassing the 250,000-mile mark (about 402,000 kilometers) without being scrapped.

For the study, specialists analyzed millions of used cars sold on the U.S. market. Based on this data, they calculated the likelihood that vehicles from different brands could travel more than 250,000 miles — a threshold considered a serious test even for modern cars.

The undisputed leader was Toyota. The Japanese manufacturer’s vehicles have a 17.8% chance of surpassing 250,000 miles, nearly four times higher than the industry average of just 4.8%.

Lexus took second place with 12.8%. Honda came in third at 10.8%, and Acura finished fourth with 7.2%. Notably, these four brands were the only ones to significantly exceed the market average.

Next in the ranking were GMC (6.4%), Chevrolet (6.1%), Mazda (6.0%), Cadillac (5.9%), Tesla (5.4%) and Ram (5.1%). Although these brands made the top ten, their results are already much closer to the industry average.

The advantage of Japanese manufacturers was especially striking. They took the top four places in the ranking, once again confirming the reputation of cars designed for a very long service life with regular maintenance.

The study also identified the most durable car models. The leader was the Toyota Tundra: the chance that this pickup will drive more than 250,000 miles stands at 36.6%. The Toyota Sequoia showed almost the same result — 36.4%.

They are followed by the Toyota 4Runner (26.8%), Toyota Tacoma (26.7%), Toyota Highlander Hybrid (25.9%) and Honda Ridgeline (25.8%). The top ten also included the Chevrolet Suburban and Toyota Avalon (22% each), Lexus GX (20.7%) and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (18.8%).

In fact, Toyota took six places in the top ten most durable cars in the world, the best result among all manufacturers.

At the other end of the ranking were mostly European brands. The lowest results were recorded by Land Rover (2.4%), Audi (2.5%) and BMW (2.8%). Slightly higher were Volkswagen (3.6%), MINI (3.9%) and Jaguar (4.1%).

iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer noted that modern cars in general have become more durable thanks to technological progress and improved manufacturing quality. However, the ability of a car to travel more than 400,000 kilometers without serious problems remains a rare achievement that depends both on the reliability of the design and on regular maintenance.

The study’s main conclusion is simple: if durability is the top priority when choosing a car, Japanese brands still remain the benchmark for reliability. And once again, Toyota has confirmed its status as the maker of some of the most durable cars in the world.
