Two 19-year-old citizens of Southern Cyprus arrested for illegal border crossing
The Lefkoşa court extended by two days the detention of two 19-year-old citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, who are accused of illegally entering the territory of the TRNC through a military restricted zone.
According to the police, on July 12 the young men entered by car from Southern Cyprus through the area of the Yeşilırmak checkpoint, without passing immigration and passport control. They were later detained while trying to leave the TRNC through the Bostancı checkpoint.
During a search, officers found on one of the detainees a document confirming that he is a reserve officer candidate in the National Guard of the Republic of Cyprus.
The investigation continues to examine surveillance camera footage and verify the detainees' statements. The court found that the investigation is at an early stage and granted the police request to extend their detention for two days.
