Two South Cyprus citizens detained on suspicion of illegally crossing a military zone
Two citizens of the Republic of Cyprus were arrested in Northern Cyprus on suspicion of illegally entering a military restricted zone and crossing the border without going through passport control.
According to the police, on July 12 at around 13:02 the suspects entered the territory of the TRNC from South Cyprus through the Yeşilırmak checkpoint area without going through immigration procedures. Later that same day, they were detained while trying to leave Northern Cyprus through the Bostancı checkpoint.
During a search, a document confirming one of the detainees’ status as a reserve officer candidate in the National Guard of the Republic of Cyprus was found.
The investigation is ongoing. Police will have to review CCTV footage and verify the detainees’ statements. The court granted the investigation’s request and remanded both men in custody for two days.
