Erhürman congratulated DISY and AKEL leaders on the election results in the Republic of Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman held phone talks with the leaders of the two largest political forces in the Republic of Cyprus, congratulating them on the results of the parliamentary elections.

According to the TRNC, Erhürman contacted DISY party chairwoman Annita Demetriou, whose party came first with 27.1% of the vote, as well as AKEL secretary general Stefanos Stefanou, whose party received 23.9% and came second in the ballot.

During the conversations, the Turkish Cypriot leader extended his congratulations on the election results and stressed the importance of maintaining political dialogue on the island amid the changing regional and domestic situation.

In the TRNC, the election results in the Republic of Cyprus are being closely analysed both from the perspective of future intercommunal relations and in the context of the possible impact of the new political balance on the Cyprus peace process.

Political observers in the TRNC note that the strengthening of the positions of the traditional parties — DISY and AKEL — may preserve space for contacts between the two communities, despite the growing influence of nationalist forces in Greek Cypriot politics.
