The European Union and the United Nations are investing in the reconstruction of the historic square in Serdarlı
Geçitkale-Serdarlı Municipality is beginning the implementation of a major international project that has received official approval from the European Union. Under the EU Financial Aid Programme for 2025, the large-scale renovation of Muhafız Square (Muhafız Meydanı) and the surrounding areas will be fully funded. The coordination and technical preparation of the work have been taken on by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) — its specialists have already arrived on site to conduct field studies and analyse the infrastructure.
The project, registered in international records as the «Renovation Project of Muhafız Square», aims to transform the neglected centre of Serdarlı into a modern public space. The organisers plan to combine the modernisation of pedestrian areas with the preservation of the location's historical and cultural heritage, which has traditionally been considered the heart of community life. The updated central area is expected to attract more visitors and increase economic activity in the region.
Municipality head Halil Kasım stressed the strategic importance of attracting foreign grants for improving the region. According to the mayor, the reconstruction of the square will not only bring life back to the historic centre, but will also provide direct economic support to local businesses. He expressed official gratitude to representatives of the European Union and the UN project team for launching the practical phase of the work.
