Famagusta Municipality to reverse one-way traffic in the Laguna area

Famagusta Municipality is introducing a new traffic scheme in the coastal Laguna area: the current one-way traffic will be reversed. The changes are scheduled to take effect this week.

The scheme has been called a “one-way ring system”. It was prepared at the proposal of the expanded transport commission, while the Famagusta Municipal Council approved it unanimously on 7 January 2026 by decision No. 07/26. The municipality explains that the changes pursue two goals: reducing congestion in the area and making travel safer.

The coastal road will remain closed to motor vehicles—the new scheme does not lift this restriction. The municipality’s Public Works Department will separately prepare the area for the safe passage of large vehicles.

Road signs and direction indicators will first be installed on the streets, after which the scheme will begin operating on a trial basis. Following the trial, traffic in the area will be reassessed and further adjustments will be made if necessary. Drivers are asked to follow the new signs and road markings carefully.
