Filo Jet death toll near Girne rises to 13, 15 people remain missing

TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said that the body of another person had been recovered from the seabed near Girne. The number of people killed in the Filo Jet disaster has risen to 13, while 15 people remain missing.

Filo Jet left the port of Girne on 30 August, a Sunday, on a voyage to Taşucu, Turkey, and sank shortly after heading out to sea. The death toll had stood at 12 the previous day.

The body was discovered by Turkish Navy vessels. According to the prime minister, the victim was a woman; her identity is being established by TRNC police.

September 5 marked the seventh day of the search operation. The work is being carried out by the TCG Işın and TCG Alemdar vessels. The dives are taking place at a depth of 554 m, where it is impossible for divers to work, so the wreckage is being examined by underwater robots. The search continues around the clock.

A total of four bodies have been recovered from the seabed. The two women found the previous day were identified as Şerife Özdemir and Nazmiye Özbolat.
