Kyrenia Municipality reminds residents about the ŞÖDAM support centre for victims of violence

Kyrenia Municipality has reminded residents about the work of the Violence Prevention and Counselling Centre (ŞÖDAM). Mayor Murat Şenkul addressed those who have experienced violence: they are not alone in the face of violence, and they can come to the centre for help.

The centre works with people who are experiencing psychological, physical, economic or sexual violence, or who are under threat. It provides psychological and social support, runs empowerment programmes, works with children, offers legal information, helps people access social services and obtain state healthcare.

The Kyrenia Municipality can be contacted on 0533 868 33 09. In an emergency, the police can be reached on 155 and the TOÇED helpline on 183.

The ŞÖDAM network was introduced in March 2026: the centres were opened by the women’s wing of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and the mayors of seven municipalities — Kyrenia, Famagusta, Lefke, Çatalköy-Esentepe, Dikmen, Değirmenlik-Akıncılar and Mesarya. The declared areas of work are education, counselling for victims, legal and psychological assistance, and the economic empowerment of women.

Violence against women remains a pressing issue in the TRNC: the KAYAD association noted this week that two women had been killed in the country in one month, while the domestic violence law has still not been adopted.
