Volunteers remove 11 bags of rubbish from the Glapsides wetlands near Famagusta

This morning, volunteers collected 11 bags of waste from the Glapsides wetlands near Famagusta. The clean-up was carried out by the Her Daim Doğa Dostları association ("Friends of Nature Always") and the Cyprus Wetlands Community, with the support of the Famagusta Municipality and the Oza Kahve coffee company, which handled the logistics.

The association’s chairman, Yusuf Şentug, said that all types of rubbish cause harm — from plastic bags and glass bottles to household waste and packaging: every item discarded in nature directly damages the ecosystem.

According to him, Glapsides is not simply a body of water, but a resting place for migratory birds, a home to endemic plants and the foundation of the biological diversity of the entire area. Polluting the site, Şentug stressed, means destroying the habitat of thousands of living creatures.

“For the sake of our future, our city and our nature, let us protect the wetlands and not pollute them again,” the head of the association urged.
