Guterres to visit Cyprus for meetings with leaders
UN Secretary-General António Guterres will arrive in Cyprus on Tuesday for a three-day visit. During the trip, he will hold separate meetings with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides.
A trilateral meeting involving Guterres, Erhürman and Christodoulides is scheduled for Wednesday in Nicosia’s buffer zone.
During his visit, the UN chief will also visit the Anthropological Laboratory of the Committee on Missing Persons and hold a meeting with representatives of civil society organisations.
The talks are expected to address confidence-building measures between the sides, possible steps to resume the negotiating process and the prospect of holding a new meeting in the «5+1» format.
Guterres’s visit will mark the first visit by a serving UN secretary-general to Cyprus in nearly 16 years. The last UN secretary-general to visit the island was Ban Ki-moon in 2010.
Guterres will be accompanied by Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and the UN Personal Representative for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin.
