Kıb-Tek to supply electricity to Güzelyurt and Lefke alternately overnight

The TRNC state electricity company Kıb-Tek has announced that electricity will be supplied to Güzelyurt and Lefke alternately overnight, as power lines were damaged by the storm. The company expects to restore normal electricity supplies to both areas on 30 August.

After inspecting the damage on site, the company deployed all available resources to repair the storm-damaged lines and the rest of the energy infrastructure. To speed up the work, Kıb-Tek also brought in private contractors; repairs will continue without interruption until morning.

The fallen high-voltage line poles are a separate challenge. Kıb-Tek has begun consultations with relevant agencies and specialists in Turkey on restoring them.

Electricity went out in Güzelyurt and Lefke during the day on 29 August, when a storm passed over Northern Cyprus: a wind gust of 182 km/h was recorded at the weather station in Gemikonağı — a national record. The outages also affected Kyrenia, while trees and a power-line pole were brought down in Nicosia.

The company asked residents to rely only on official announcements from Kıb-Tek and not to trust rumours. Further updates on the restoration work will be provided.
