Seven people have died at work in Northern Cyprus in eight months — the same number as in the whole of 2025

Seven people died at workplaces in the TRNC during the first eight months of 2026 — exactly the same number as in the whole of 2025, when the country had 164,000 registered workers. These figures were presented at the “Occupational Safety and Workers’ Health” panel organised by the Cyprus Turkish Medical Association (KTTB).

According to the statistics presented at the panel, the occupational mortality rate in Northern Cyprus is approximately three times higher than the average for the countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The panel was held in two parts, with university lecturers and members of the TRNC parliament joining the discussion.

KTTB President Professor Ceyhun Dalkan recalled that the creation of an occupational medicine system — with in-house doctors at enterprises — has been included in the programmes of all political parties for years, but has still not been implemented.

Participants in the panel listed what needs to be done: strengthen the legal and institutional framework for occupational safety, effectively launch medical services at enterprises, create a unified system for recording and reporting accidents, expand the capabilities of inspections, and promote a safety culture. The goal was formulated as follows: “Zero workplace deaths. A healthy and safe working life.”
