The Turkish Cypriot Medical Association (KTTB) has appealed to parents ahead of the start of the school year in Northern Cyprus: preparing for school is not limited to notebooks and uniforms; children’s physical, emotional and social needs are equally important. Classes in the TRNC begin on 14 September.

TRNC doctors urge parents to focus on their children’s mental wellbeing before the start of the school year

The association described the start of the school year as an important period of adaptation, affecting children’s emotional stability, their relationships with peers and their everyday habits.

Parents are advised to restore their children’s sleep routine in advance, ensure regular meals and leave time in the daily schedule for physical activity and play. According to KTTB, screen time should be limited depending on the child’s age.

If a child finds it difficult to adjust to school, doctors ask parents not to dismiss their concerns, but to listen and understand the reasons behind them, as well as maintain contact with the school. The statement also specifically highlights the need to watch out for bullying by peers.

If parents are unable to manage the situation on their own, KTTB recommends seeking help from specialists in child and adolescent mental health.
