Second case of illegal employment uncovered in Lapta Municipality

Another case of possible illegal employment of foreign nationals has been uncovered in the Lapta–Alsancak–Çamlıbel Municipality (LAÇ).

The municipality had previously received an administrative fine of 60,618 Turkish lira following an inspection by Labour Ministry inspectors. It was then found that a person holding a tourist visa was working at a municipal site in the Karşıyaka area without a work permit.

After a short period of time, a similar case occurred again. According to available information, construction work on a wall approximately 70 metres long was handed over by municipal employee H.S. to contractor H.G. at a price of 550 lira per metre. During the inspection, it was established that H.G. was in Northern Cyprus on a tourist visa and did not have a work permit. In addition, a Pakistani national involved in the work had student status but also did not have permission to work.

After police arrived at the site, H.G. left the area. The Pakistani national was taken to the police station, after which legal proceedings were initiated against him. H.G.'s identity was established through the vehicle he had left at the work site. He was later summoned to give a statement under police escort.

According to the investigation, H.G. said that he had received the contract through municipal employee H.S. The inspection is being conducted by inspectors from the Labour Department in Lefkoşa. Police and the relevant authorities continue to investigate all the circumstances of the case. The repeated discovery of a similar violation in the same municipality shortly after the first case has caused widespread public reaction.
