Police in Northern Cyprus carried out large-scale checks across the country to ensure road safety. During the raids, officers inspected 1,657 vehicles, identified numerous violations, impounded 29 cars and arrested one driver.
The most common offence among drivers was speeding, with police issuing 37 fines for this violation. The second most common offence was driving under the influence: inspectors caught 22 drunk drivers. In addition, 16 people were fined for ignoring road signs and road markings.
Police also recorded cases of missing mandatory documents: 5 drivers were penalized for driving without insurance and without a paid road tax (seyrüsefer), while another 5 people failed to wear seat belts. Other violations included dangerous driving, running a red light, illegal tinting of the windshield and front side windows, faulty lighting equipment, as well as transporting passengers without a commercial licence. One driver was operating a vehicle without a licence or insurance at all, while another ignored an officer’s order to stop. The TRNC police said these raids will continue on a regular basis to help prevent accidents.
