Kyrenia mayor says his social media accounts were blocked: “They are trying to silence us”
The Mayor of Kyrenia, Murat Şenkul, said that his WhatsApp account was forcibly deactivated. The head of the municipality is convinced that this is not a random technical failure, but a targeted attack that is part of coordinated attempts to restrict freedom of speech and deprive him of channels of communication with the public.
According to the mayor, pressure on his information resources began after his trip to Brussels. He says that during his stay in Europe, deputies from the far-right Cypriot party ELAM staged various provocations, trying to disrupt the speeches of the Turkish Cypriot delegation. Şenkul believes that the current problems with the accounts are a continuation of the same campaign: first, his Facebook page was blocked due to mass false complaints (and later managed to be restored), and now WhatsApp has come under attack.
The mayor described what is happening as a manifestation of anti-democratic thinking, stressing that such methods will not bring their organizers the desired result. While the messenger remains blocked, the Mayor of Kyrenia asked citizens to send him standard SMS messages to his mobile number for prompt communication on work and personal matters.
