Midjourney stunned the world: the creators of AI images decided to replace MRI and launch a network of medical spas

The company that became famous for generating images with artificial intelligence unexpectedly announced a completely new direction — medical diagnostics. The creators of Midjourney unveiled the Midjourney Medical project, within which they are developing a revolutionary whole-body scanner based on ultrasound, as well as a network of special medical spa centers.

At first glance, it sounds like the plot of science fiction. However, the company’s management claims that the technology already exists and is being tested.

The scanner of the future instead of MRI

The device called Midjourney Scanner works on the principle of ultrasound tomography. A person stands on a platform and is slowly lowered into water through a ring of hundreds of thousands of ultrasound sensors. In one minute, the system collects a huge amount of data and forms a three-dimensional model of the body’s internal tissues.

According to the developers, the technology uses sound waves rather than radiation or powerful magnetic fields, as in CT and MRI. The goal of the project is to produce images comparable in quality to MRI, but tens of times faster and cheaper.

Midjourney says that in the future, scanning could take about 60 seconds and become so accessible that people would undergo it regularly — even every day.

A medical spa instead of a hospital

The most unusual part of the project is not the scanner at all.

The company plans to open the first Midjourney Spa in San Francisco as early as 2027. Visitors are promised saunas, jacuzzis, cold plunge pools and rooms with a «golden light», where body scanning will happen at the same time. The creators want to turn medical diagnostics from an unpleasant procedure into part of ordinary rest and health care.

The idea is for people to regularly collect data about their bodies and track changes over time: the effects of training, nutrition, age and lifestyle.

Ambitions for a billion scans a month

The company’s plans look extremely ambitious. By 2031, Midjourney expects to deploy more than 50,000 scanners around the world and reach a volume of up to one billion examinations per month. For comparison: even the largest MRI networks today do not come close to such scale.

The developers acknowledge that full medical use will require regulatory approval, including from the FDA. Therefore, at the first stage, the system will create detailed body composition maps and accumulate data for further research.

Scientists and users are already arguing

The announcement sparked a heated reaction online. Some call the project a potential revolution in preventive medicine and believe the idea of mass painless scanning is incredibly promising. Others treat the company’s claims with caution and note the lack of independent studies confirming that the technology can truly compete with MRI.

Skeptics also point out that the path from a polished presentation to certified medical equipment usually takes years of testing and approvals.

From generating cats to diagnosing humans

Just a few years ago, Midjourney was associated exclusively with generating images from text prompts. Now the company is trying to enter one of the most complex and heavily regulated markets in the world — healthcare.

Whether the creators of AI images will manage to pull off the same revolution in medicine that they brought to the world of digital art remains to be seen. But one thing can already be said: this is one of the most unexpected technology announcements of 2026.
