The notion that prices are lower in the South is mistaken
The recently popular notion that shopping for groceries in the Republic of Cyprus is more profitable has failed to stand up to the numbers. The Ministry of Economy and Energy of Northern Cyprus has published the results of a fresh comparative analysis of the cost of the basic consumer basket on both sides of the border.
During the monitoring, the ministry's specialists compared prices for 66 essential items. It turned out that for 54 items, prices in Northern Cyprus are lower than in supermarkets in the Republic of Cyprus. As Economy Minister Olgun Amcaoğlu stated, the now-popular talk about the overall high cost of living in the North is fully refuted by hard statistics. The authorities also assured that they will continue to monitor the domestic market in order to keep prices under control.
