Man rescues driver from burning car
A young driver narrowly survived a serious crash on the Nicosia — Famagusta highway thanks to the courage of a passing witness.
The 22-year-old driver was trapped in the car, which caught fire after the collision. At that moment, Suleyman Zügürt was driving past the scene. Seeing the smoke, he immediately stopped and rushed to help.
Despite the risk to his own life and the danger of an explosion, the man tried to open the car doors. When the driver's door was blocked and flames were coming from the passenger side, he opened the rear door, pulled the victim from the front seat to the back, and managed to get him out of the car.
Just seconds after the rescue, the car was completely engulfed in flames.
First aid was provided to the injured man by a trainee doctor who happened to be nearby. The young man was then taken to Famagusta State Hospital, after which he was transferred to Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Hospital in Nicosia.
According to the information available, the driver suffered serious fractures and internal bleeding. His condition remains under medical supervision.
The incident was described by Suleyman Zügürt's wife, Burcu Sultan Betin. According to her, the family was returning from Kyrenia when they witnessed the accident. Despite the cries of bystanders that the car could explode at any moment, Zügürt did not back down and managed to save the young man literally moments before the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames.
The rescuer's family is in touch with the injured man's relatives and hopes for his speedy recovery.
