5G rollout to begin in Northern Cyprus on November 15
Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell and the Information Technologies and Communications Authority (BTHK) have signed a protocol for the launch of a 5G network in Northern Cyprus. The service is scheduled to begin on November 15, 2026. The signing ceremony took place at the BTHK building. The document was signed by BTHK Chairman Associate Professor Dr. Kadri Bürüncük and Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell CEO Murat Küçüközdemir.
Under the authorizations granted by BTHK, additional frequencies will be used alongside those already in operation to launch 5G. The new technology is expected to provide users with higher internet speeds, lower latency and a more stable connection. 5G is expected to create new opportunities not only for private users, but also for public institutions, businesses and entrepreneurs, while accelerating digital transformation in areas such as education, healthcare, tourism and manufacturing.
The high speed and capacity of 5G can also be used for home internet. Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell plans to offer 5G Superbox solutions that, where coverage conditions are suitable, will provide wireless connections at speeds comparable to fiber-optic internet. This is particularly relevant for areas with limited access to fixed infrastructure. BTHK Chairman Kadri Bürüncük said that the transition to 5G was an important stage in the development of telecommunications infrastructure and the digital transformation of the TRNC. According to him, 5G should be viewed not only as a way to increase mobile connectivity speeds, but also as new infrastructure for the technological development of various sectors.
Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell CEO Murat Küçüközdemir said that the company had successfully completed 5G demonstration tests on July 19–21. He noted that November 15 had been identified as a suitable date for the launch of the service following the allocation of additional frequencies. Küçüközdemir also said that the company intended to use the capabilities of 5G not only for mobile devices, but also for home internet through Superbox solutions.
