Use of Starlink and similar systems banned in Northern Cyprus without government approval

The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTHK) has officially announced that operating Starlink or similar satellite communication devices in Northern Cyprus is prohibited without prior authorization. The authority stressed that violating this requirement is considered a criminal offense.
Individuals who knowingly use such equipment or assist its operation face penalties under current legislation. Sanctions include a fine of up to four minimum monthly wages, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. According to the Electronic Communications Law No. 6/2012, the import, sale, and use of any communication devices are strictly regulated by the state.
The BTHK noted that even the presence of CE certification and technical frequency compatibility does not exempt Starlink terminals from requiring a license. Unauthorized devices pose serious security risks as they allow users to bypass established control and audit mechanisms. The authority’s board of directors decided not to issue preliminary import approvals for such equipment, except in special cases related to public safety.
