The first tourist police patrols have begun duty on the streets of Northern Cyprus cities

The Main Police Directorate of Northern Cyprus has officially announced the launch of a new specialized tourist police unit, whose officers have already begun patrolling the country’s key resort areas and historic centers. The main task of the new structure is to ensure the safety of foreign citizens, prevent offenses against visitors to the island, and provide them with prompt information assistance. The patrols will be stationed in places with the largest concentrations of tourists, including popular beaches, squares near ancient fortresses, port areas, and central shopping streets of Girne, Famagusta, Iskele, and Lefkoşa

All employees of the new agency underwent a rigorous competitive selection process and a special training course that included in-depth study of foreign languages, the basics of international law, as well as training in effective communication and conflict resolution. Unlike regular police officers, the new patrol officers wear special uniforms and insignia that allow foreigners to easily identify them in the crowd. In addition to cracking down on the work of illegal guides and fraudulent schemes in street trade, the unit’s officers are empowered to promptly accept reports from affected foreigners, sparing them bureaucratic delays at general police stations.

The Ministry of Tourism expressed confidence that the presence of qualified language patrols on the streets will significantly improve the comfort of foreign guests and strengthen the international image of the TRNC as a safe holiday destination. The ministry emphasized that this project is a pilot one, and based on the results of the current summer season, a decision will be made on expanding the tourist police force and purchasing additional vehicles for them. Local businesses have already supported the initiative, noting that the appearance of such patrols will help reduce petty theft and conflict incidents in resort areas.
