Nalbantoglu Hospital in Lefkosa Performs Surgery for Congenital Heart Defect for the First Time

Dr. Burhan Nalbantoglu State Hospital in Lefkosa has performed surgery for a congenital heart defect for the first time. Until now, patients with such diagnoses in Northern Cyprus had been referred abroad for treatment.

TRNC Health Minister Hakan Dinçyürek, who visited the cardiovascular surgery department after the procedure, said that the patient was 21 years old. He had a heart septal defect, as well as congenital narrowing of the aorta—both below the valve and in the supravalvular region.

“Previously, patients with such conditions were sent abroad for treatment. This operation was successfully performed at Nalbantoglu Hospital for the first time. Our patient is in good condition,” Dinçyürek said.

Cardiac surgeon Hasan Ceyda said that the patient had come to the hospital complaining of shortness of breath and a rapid heartbeat. The decision to operate was made after an examination and consultation with a team of cardiologists who work with adult patients. “Such operations were usually performed in Turkey. We prepared and successfully carried out the procedure,” he said.

The minister congratulated the patient and the surgical team, adding that the introduction of new methods in cardiac surgery in Northern Cyprus would continue.
