The decision was adopted by a vote at the union’s congress, marking the first time that a sports organisation from the TRNC has joined an international structure at the institutional level.

Observer status gives the federation the opportunity to participate institutionally and actively in the work of an international sports organisation.

The process was supported by the Turkish Table Tennis Federation. Its president, Kerim Koç, said that he had followed the proceedings and called the result a historic achievement for the table tennis community and its athletes. According to him, this is also a very important step for the sports community of Northern Cyprus.

The TRNC is recognised only by Turkey, and its sports federations had so far remained outside international structures at the institutional level. Table tennis has become the first discipline to secure such representation.
