The Parliament of Northern Cyprus Re-adopts the Law on Housing Purchase Support
The General Assembly of the Republican Assembly (the parliament of the TRNC) has passed, by majority vote, the Law on Housing Purchase Support (amendment), which had previously been returned by the president for reconsideration. Twenty-six deputies voted in favor of the adoption of the document, while 9 voted against. The report of the relevant committee on legal and political affairs was presented by its chair, Yasemi Ozturk.
During the debate, opposition deputies from the CTP, Ürün Solyalı and Ongun Talat, criticized the document, saying that the state lacks a comprehensive housing policy, that the issue of housing for young people is being used for political gain, and that attempts are being made to introduce temporary solutions instead of systemic funding.
Interior Minister Dursun Oğuz rejected the opposition’s criticism, recalling the launch of the “First Home” subsidized loan program, which around 1,250 people have used. He also emphasized that, under the protocol with Turkey, work is under way to create infrastructure for plots in rural areas, and that new social housing projects are also planned.
