Girne beaches are impeccably clean and safe for swimming

The Municipality of Girne has officially confirmed the full safety and impeccable cleanliness of all city beaches. Mayor Murat Şenkul issued a written statement in which he dispelled public concerns and backed up his words with the results of recent laboratory tests of seawater quality.

The head of the municipality acknowledged that the city’s wastewater treatment facilities are still operating at full capacity. Nevertheless, environmental risks along the coastline have been almost completely eliminated. According to Şenkul, a key role in this was played by the deep-sea pipeline for discharging treated water, built to European Union standards back when former mayor Sümer Aygın was in office, as well as the recent modernization of pumping stations by the current administration.

The mayor especially stressed that, thanks to the strict oversight of the Department of Environmental Protection over hotels and the swift actions of the authorities, the illegal discharge of wastewater into the coastal zone of Girne has now been completely stopped. Monitoring data clearly show that the coastal water fully complies with sanitary standards.
