The hunger threshold in Northern Cyprus has exceeded 43 thousand lira

The KTAMS civil servants’ trade union announced new data on the minimum cost of living in Northern Cyprus. As of the end of May, the hunger threshold for a family of four stood at 43,949 lira, while the poverty threshold jumped to 237,051 lira.

The calculations were made on the basis of Ministry of Health data on healthy nutrition standards and price statistics. Thus, the minimum food expenses for an adult man amount to 11,931 lira, for a woman — 11,422 lira, for a teenager — 12,504 lira, and for a young child — 8,091 lira.

The union emphasizes that due to rising prices for housing rent, electricity, fuel, education, and healthcare, a family now needs more than 237,000 lira per month to live normally. According to official statistics, May inflation was 2.06%, and overall inflation for the first five months of the year reached 14.33%.
