Representatives of the sides to begin preparations for Erhürman–Christodoulides meeting

The chief representatives of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides in the Cyprus talks will meet on 20 August to prepare for the leaders’ meeting scheduled for 26 August.

TRNC Presidential Secretary Mehmet Dana and the representative of the Greek Cypriot side in the talks, Menelaos Menelaou, will meet at 11:00. They will discuss the main topics of the negotiations and the possible agenda for the meeting between TRNC President Tufan Erhürman and President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides.

According to the Cypriot press, Mehmet Dana will also brief diplomats.

One of the UN’s tasks following Secretary-General António Guterres’s recent visit to Cyprus was to formalise the agreements reached by the sides במסגרת the talks. However, according to media reports, it will probably not be possible to prepare the relevant document before the leaders’ meeting on 26 August.

The leaders are expected to discuss the opening of new crossing points, the methodology of the negotiations and confidence-building measures.

The media note that no major breakthroughs are expected from the 26 August meeting. At the same time, it should provide the first opportunity to assess the results of the sides’ work following Guterres’s visit and determine the next steps in the negotiating process.
