Rising Prices in Northern Cyprus: Living Costs Are Increasing Faster Than Salaries
Residents of Northern Cyprus continue to face rising living costs. According to local media and economic reviews, inflationary pressure remains despite occasional fluctuations in global market prices. The main hit is falling on everyday expenses — from fuel and utilities to food and cigarettes.
Cigarettes and basic goods are becoming more expensive again
One of the most noticeable topics in recent days has been another increase in cigarette prices. The cost of a pack has risen by about 5 Turkish lira, and some popular brands now cost up to 120 lira.
This is not the first increase this year — prices had already gone up by 10 lira earlier, making tobacco products one of the fastest-rising categories.
Fuel remains a key inflation factor
Experts note that fuel and energy continue to “drive up” prices in the economy of Northern Cyprus. Higher petrol and diesel prices directly affect delivery costs, logistics, and the price of goods in stores.
Each new fuel increase is quickly reflected in price tags — from taxis to grocery chains.
Utility costs are also rising
An additional blow for households has been the increase in electricity tariffs. Earlier reports indicated a rise of about 22%, which has noticeably increased monthly bills, especially during the summer season when air conditioners are used heavily.
Housing and rent: a hidden driver of the crisis
In addition to essential goods, rental prices continue to rise. According to analysts, this is one of the main expense items for local residents and foreigners living on the island.
The market is gradually shifting toward a more expensive segment, especially in popular areas such as Kyrenia and Iskele.
The overall picture
Although inflation in the region may fluctuate, the overall trend remains steady: price growth is outpacing income growth, and this is gradually reducing the purchasing power of the population.
In discussions, residents increasingly note that even basic expenses — groceries, rent and transport — have risen by tens of percent over the past few years.
Bottom line
The economic situation in Northern Cyprus remains tense: energy + fuel + rent = the main trigger of price growth, affecting the island's entire economy.
