105 students in Northern Cyprus to receive scholarships in memory of the “Champion Angels”

The Şampiyon Melekleri Yaşatma Derneği (“Champion Angels” Memorial Association) and the Cyprus Turkish Education Foundation KTEV have signed a protocol under which 105 students in Northern Cyprus will receive scholarships in the 2026/2027 academic year.

This is the third year of cooperation between the two organisations. Over the course of the joint programme, scholarships have been awarded to 315 students.

The association was established by the families of those who died in the earthquake on 6 February 2023. A school volleyball team from Famagusta was killed when a hotel collapsed in Adıyaman, Türkiye; in Northern Cyprus, the team is known as the “Champion Angels”.

Association Chairperson Ruşen Yücesoylu Karakaya says the organisation will continue working to ensure that young people receive a quality education and grow into useful members of society. According to her, the association has two areas of work: seeking justice in the case concerning the tragedy and supporting the education of other children. All funds received by the organisation go towards scholarships for high-achieving students from families in need.

KTEV Board of Trustees Chairperson Umure Ors emphasised that too much depends on the quality of education: the decisions of people who have received a poor education affect the lives of thousands of others.

The school year in the TRNC begins on 14 September.
