Events marking the 52nd anniversary of Peace and Freedom Day begin in Northern Cyprus

The official programme of the celebrations of 20 July — Peace and Freedom Day began with an address by President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Tufan Erhürman on BRTK television.

In his speech, Erhürman stated that Turkish Cypriots would not give up their rights, equality and security on the island.

«This people will never agree to become a minority. This people will not allow their children to be isolated from the world and will not accept being ignored,» the president said.

Erhürman also noted that Turkish Cypriots support a solution to the Cyprus problem and want to work towards this process. According to him, steps must be taken to build confidence and efforts must be made to achieve a meaningful negotiating process.

As part of the celebration programme, wreath-laying ceremonies at monuments will take place today. The main events will be held on 20 July, including a military parade on Dr Fazıl Küçük Boulevard and a reception at the presidential palace.

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, representing the President of Türkiye, will attend the celebrations.

Events will be held in all districts of Northern Cyprus. Ceremonies, speeches and festive programmes are planned in Famagusta, Kyrenia, Güzelyurt, İskele and Lefke.

In Kyrenia, the celebrations will conclude with an air show by the Turkish Air Force aerobatic team SOLOTÜRK.

As part of the events, residents will also be able to visit Turkish Navy vessels: the submarine TCG I. İnönü, the missile boat TCG Zıpkın and the frigate TCG Gökova.

In addition, on Monday, the Eastern Mediterranean Vessel Traffic Management Centre and the headquarters of the Coastal Shipping Security and Ship Salvage Company will be inaugurated in Famagusta.
