The school year in Northern Cyprus starts on September 14: 59,000 students to return to classrooms

Schools in Northern Cyprus are reopening after the summer holidays: primary schools will begin classes on September 14, while secondary and vocational-technical schools will open on September 15. In total, around 59,000 children will attend 196 TRNC schools during the 2026/2027 academic year, with approximately 6,500 teachers working in public and private schools.

Primary schools will have the largest number of students: 132 schools — 110 public and 22 private — will welcome around 28,000 children. Secondary schools — 38 public and 12 private — are expected to have around 25,600 students, while vocational-technical high schools will have approximately 4,200. Another 900 people are enrolled in adult education programmes.

The TRNC Ministry of National Education has also published the academic calendar. For primary schools, the first semester will run from September 14 to January 29, 2027, when students will receive their report cards. After the winter holidays, the second semester will begin on February 16, and the academic year will end on June 14, 2027, when students will receive certificates of completion along with their report cards.

The dates for general secondary and vocational-technical education are shifted: the first semester will run from September 15 to January 29, 2027, and the second from February 16 to June 11, 2027.
