Court remands man who attacked police officer in Gönyeli
In Gönyeli, the court ordered the remand of Ertunç Sayıner in custody for up to 20 days. He is accused of attacking a police officer, driving under the influence of alcohol, and a number of other offences. As emerged during the hearing, there are already 11 pending criminal cases against the suspect.
The incident took place on May 24. According to police, Sayıner, who was heavily intoxicated after a traffic accident at the Alayköy roundabout, resisted arrest and pushed a police officer, causing him to fall to the ground. The suspect's blood alcohol level was 180 promille.
In addition to attacking a police officer, the man has been charged with obstructing the performance of official duties, disturbing the peace, insults and disorderly conduct.
In court, police presented information about the defendant's many previous cases. Since 2019, he has repeatedly appeared in investigations related to assaults, breach of court orders, possession of knives and drugs, as well as traffic violations. In several cases, Sayıner was previously released on bail, but according to the investigation, he continued to commit new offences and evade court procedures.
The prosecution said the suspect is wanted under several warrants and poses a risk of reoffending if released.
After hearing the parties, Judge Şevket Gazi noted that the defendant had already been given several chances to correct his behavior. «The court gave you the opportunity, but you continued to commit crimes while at large,» the judge said, after which he ordered Sayıner to be remanded in custody for up to 20 days.
